Our meeting on October 14th will be given by local naturalist and photographer Ken Smith. Ken lives in Matlock but has been going to Beeley Moor for nearly 60 years observing and studying the wildlife. We will be treated to a feast of wonderful photographs of many classic moorland species, curlew, snipe, lapwing as well as less well known birds of passage like great grey shrike (photograph) and dotterel. Ken will show us outstanding views of several species of owl and raptor as well as reptiles and butterflies and moths. Many changes have taken place during Ken’s time including the demise of the merlin which last bred 6 years ago and the red grouse, very few of which now occur. No doubt this will provoke a lively discussion as often happens at our meetings.
