In 2003 Edward Mayer pioneered an approach to preserving the future of the Swift by addressing their decline, largely due to increasing loss of vital nesting opportunities. His success through advice, talks and encouragement of volunteer action, led to the RSPB asking him to take his initiative nationwide.
